About the Event
As the world is moving towards a net zero future, a prerequisite for meeting the 1.5-degree climate target, coal phase down has become inevitable. India has a net zero target of 2070, but some coal rich states like Telangana have set an even more ambitious target of net zero by 2047, which is 23 years before the national target. Telangana, which produces 7% of total coal in India is actively planning its net zero future. Mancherial and Peddapalli are two highest coal producing districts in the state collectively these districts account for 45% of the state’s coal production. Beyond coal production, these districts are home to several coal-based thermal power plants, fly ash units, and coal-dependent MSMEs. Therefore, long-term strategies for diversification are essential for well-planned transition in the state.
To contribute to understanding Telangana’s net zero future and just transition plans, we conducted a first-of-its-kind mixed-method study including a household survey, an enterprise survey, multiple interviews and policy analysis of two of the highest coal-producing districts in Telangana: Peddapalli and Mancherial. Based on this extensive research, Swaniti Global is launching a report on the Coal Dependence and Economic Diversification pathways in Peddapalli and Mancherial,& on 12th December 2024 in Hyderabad at hotel Radisson Blu from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
